TENERIFE WALKS / ROUTES

THE FIELD

Tenerife is the largest island of the Canary Islands. These and thus to Spain in the EU group of islands lies some four hours to fly  from England some 200 kilometers off the coast of Morocco in the Atlantic Ocean. The island is of volcanic origin. The highest point of the island is the volcano El Teide, which at 3718 meters the highest mountain in the Spanish territory.

MAPPING TENERIFE

Tenerife is associated with Mortgage, but the island has two completely coastlines: on the north coast is around Puerto de la Cruz often working wolkt and rainy and excessively green, the south is in the rain shadow of the mighty Pico del Teide and it is sunny and desert like. The third climate and the landscape you see in the Cañadas del Teide, a huge caldera with a diameter of about ten kilometers, including the 3718-meter Pico del Teide state. By a high plateau enclosed crater rim is about 2000 meters altitude and desert-like in some places with relatively recent   lava fields. Here the sunhines often as elsewhere on the island raining. In the caldera, the winters are very cold.

BEST TIME TO GO

Basically, you can use year-round walks in Tenerife. Between November December and April that you have to top the 1500 meters to take account of snow. Snowfall on the Pico del Teide, even the whole year as well.

THERE TO GO

In Tenerife, two airports: Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the Northeast and Aeroporto Tenerife Sur Reina Sofia in the south.

From the England, in this way is a four hour flight to Tenerife. Iberia flies via Madrid at the two airports, but this connection is much expensive  and you also lost significantly more travel time.

TRAVEL POSSIBILITY ON THE ISLAND

There are several opportunities to get to and from the walks too far places you can rent a car, you can use public transport or you can move by taxi.A private car hire in Tenerife gives you much freedom of movement, but you can avoid it not uncommon to hire a taxi. Choose public transport, please note that buses in the mainland rarely drive. This is only once a day a bus from La Orotava through Las Cañadas del Teida to Vilaflor, and vice versa. This is not practical solution for a relaxing holiday. We experienced it as the easiest and advantageous to you to move to Tenerife by taxi.

SLEEP POSSIBILITY

In the interior of Tenerife are few opportunities for the night beginning or at the end of the most beautiful walks - in the expensive paradores Nacional the Cañadas del Teide excluded. If you have a week's time, splits that period in two parts, for example, three days and stay in the picturesque La Orotava on the north coast and three days in Vilaflor on the southern slopes of Las Cañadas del Teide. Within half hour drive from both villages to reach the beginning of certain five walks which vary considerably. Another possibility is to Albergen few days in Monte de Anaga in the Anaga Mountains reside. It is also advisable to have a night to sleep in the only refuge of Tenerife. These is slightly below the top of the Pico del Teide and hot Refugio Alta Vista. You need great beds, but you can not buy food. Make sure you book early.

 EL TEIDE

El Teide is the third volume volcano on earth, a cone which 3718 meters from the waves of the Atlantic Ocean rises. Actually, El Teide Tenerife and environment returned, because the lava of the volcano, the island formed. At this highest peak of Tenerife Spain derives its existence and at the same time, the axis of El Teide also a fertile ground for a litany of Plants you were only here and nowhere else does. El Teide on Tenerife is also a climate divorce. The northeast Passaat drives year-round damp air temperature of almost equal to the north flank top of the volcano, which is most of the time there are clouds. The   orthcoast rains often and violently, with the result that the vegetation there  lush is lower to find banana trees, vines and palms, and higher untouched pine forests. The south of Tenerife are situated in the rain shadow of the volcano, which is rarely rain. The south on the island are, how dry it is. The enormous height, the extremes in temperature and precipitation on a relatively small area, plus provide fertile soil in Tenerife for a huge variety of hot dry landscape. Only in the south are the resorts.

HIKING ON TENERIFE

In Tenerife, a long distance walk, the Sendero Atravesar las montañas The Tenerife (samt). This tour consists of twelve stages and will start at El Draguila on the north east coast and leads through the backbone of the island to the top of the Pico del Teide. Samt then falls through the Cañadas del Teide to Vilaflor. The walk will end finally to 630 meters in height the hamlet of Arona on the south slope of the island. A major problem with this is that while samt no overnight option date, and that foerageren just a few points along the route as possible. The only non-Spanish description of the route we found in the book already twenty years out of Kümmerly Mountain Welt Teneriffa + Frey. Another adventurous trek we found on the Internet. This results from the Playa del Socorro along the northern slopes to the top of El Teide.

TRAILS AND MARKINGS

Most walks in Tenerife leyden excellent paths, sometimes wide cart tracks. There are still new paths built. As we passed an excellent new path between the estates of Vilaflor. The most difficult path founds us to the traverse of the Pico del Teide to the Pico Viejo: a poorly marked wake turned over a relatively recent lava field. The rocks are sharp and prickly. The flag and signs vary greatly from one to the other wallment. On some routes are wooden signs with clear destinations. In general lack of time estimates.

OVERVIEW OF THE WALKING OPPORTUNITIES

Overall, there are four areas in Tenerife where you can walk excellent: The north coast around Puerto de la Cruz - The Teno mountains in the west - The Anaga Mountains in the northeast - Las Cañadas del Teide Above the north coast of Puerto de la Cruz is relatively the most rain. You find vineyards, banana plantations and vast pine forests in the transition of the cultivated land to the barren slopes of the volcano El Teide. From Puerto de la Cruz and La Orotava you within half an hour, then the beginning of a large number of varied walks achieve. Expected no weather. In Generally you here, especially during the afternoon, walking in the fog, because the impact of landing is high wind. Tip: advisable for these walks of top to bottom up,  ecause the increases are long and steep. Further to the north of Tenerife is very mountainous and very inhospitable. Here you will find the rugged Tenogebergte. The most beautiful and famous walk on this Part of Tenerife Masca leads through the gorge to the sea, where you through a Tourist boat can bring them back to the 'concrete village' Los Gigantos. On the other hand, in the northwest, there is a kind of knob on Tenerife, which is the peninsula of the Anaga Mountains. Near the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, there are twelve walks at a distance of less than half hour ride. There are very picturesque and often difficult to reach villages. The backbone of this geologically oldest part of Tenerife is overgrown  with jungle that is fed by sea. The most famous hiking Tenerife lies in the center of the island; This is Las Cañadas del Teide. Actually we made four of the six walks, because here because of the high altitude above the weather often is that el—suppose to rain on the island provides. In Las Cañadas del Teide find you differ -landscapes: dense pine forests, this relatively young and volatile lava flows, the highest point of Tenerife in the winter are often covered with snow, and special events such as erosion Paisaje Lunar, the lunar landscape.
